Door number 13 is a series of facts. Facts are not perfect - people prefer stories - It’s just how our minds work. I’ll try to keep it interesting!🌿 🌿 It used to be traditional to eat pig heads at Christmas, with mustard - then goose 🌿 Geese will not be industrially farmed - they just won’t have it✌️- so then it was turkeys 🌿 in the UK we consumed 10 million turkeys last Christmas 🌿 Except that the equivalent of 2 million were thrown away - 1 in 10 people have thrown away the whole bird because of cooking mishaps 🌿 Turducken is the name for a chicken, stuffed in a duck, stuffed in a turkey 🌿 The animals we farm weigh together 700 million tons, we humans weigh 300 million tons. All the other animals on earth weigh less than 100 million tons. 🌿 It takes, for example, 8 to 16 pounds of cereals or beans in feed to produce 1 pound of beef. (Energy transfer & land use in meat production is extremely inefficient) 🌿 Transition to plant-based diet would free up farmland equal in area to Africa 🌿 Every second, 1-2 acres of rainforest are cleared for animal grazing 🌿 91% of deforestation is due to animal farming 🌿 Livestock together produce 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions 🌿 Scientific consensus gives us 12 years to prevent catastrophic climate collapse (if very dramatic changes are made) - tipping point is now 🌿 Since 1970, 60% of all wildlife populations have been wiped out 🌿 We currently average 2 wild species driven to extinction each day ... (keep it Christmassy Paul! ... 🌿 Reindeer populations in the Arctic have crashed by more than half in the last 2 decades 🎄 🌿 Turkey is not the part of Christmas dinner that people like the most - (roast potatoes) 🌿 No goose fat is required to make delicious roast potatoes 🌿 Meat is considered to be ‘tamasic’ under Ayurveda - both destructive & dulling of energy & digestive efficacy 🌿 We can spread the Christmas table with delicious, plant-based things like this spiced, roasted winter ‘slaw - still feast, celebrate heartily & feel better bodily, mentally & spiritually 🌿 We should, at the very least, not bin our leftover turkey ... because ... 🌿 We are, currently, collectively, eating our young
